Trump: The Pirate of Hormuz

There is nothing new under the sun. Five centuries ago, the Portuguese conquistadors imposed a toll (“cartaz”) for ships trying to get through the Strait of Hormuz. Yet Trump and Hegseth didn’t know what every ship captain has known for centuries: the importance of securing the Strait. And the wee problem with Trump’s plan to collect passage tolls in partnership with Iran is that it violates international laws against piracy.
